My family submitted our formal application for the green card and got our receipt in late August. I have already gotten my work permit, but I'm wondering if anyone knows how long I'll have to wait to get my "home return permit" (Home Visit Permit 回乡证) to go visit China?

If you application has been approve and all you need to do is wait for the card, you can request at the USCIS office to stamp your passport so you can go to China.
If it has not been approved, you have to wait until it gets approve. Or you can request a re-entry permit at the USCIS office.
