Is only the US 'going green'??

The US is all over the Go Green thing. Which is fine that we are concerned but what about the other countries? Is China, Africa, Canada etc.?? Just wondering?

Is only the US 'going green'??
Most of Europe is far ahead of North America in terms of being green. Japan and Korea have also taken big steps in reducing waste and other measures to go Green.


China and India while they are developing and coming to the industrious age, have been developing in a 'green' manner as well and is one of the biggest developers of sustainable energy (usually over looked by the increase of their ever growing wastes in attempts to compete with the developed world and their populations).


Canada is also very much on the same page as U.S in terms of going 'green'. Prime Minister Stephen Harper just has concerns regarding fairness (which I am opposed to) for he is pointing to India and China. Well they were not well developed countries 1970 so their consumption at that time of carbon fuels per capita was very little. Africa has a very little carbon footprint compared to North America.


As North Americans we have so much and waste so much per person. I heard in my city there is 375Liters of fresh water being used per person per day (includes cleaning of roads, swimming pools etc.) While in Africa there are people that use less than 50L per week.


North America is starting to make more noise about change yet we are the ones that really need to. (China and India will need to be innovative if they want to be competitive economically and try and sustain their environmental imprint)
Reply:Some countries are so much greener than us it wouldn't matter if they went green or not. Houses in many places in Europe could fit in a US garage. There is no need for a huge house except for a place to store junk that isn't really used. The cars are small since gas is so expensive and food is grown local since it costs so much to ship around.
Reply:did you wake up from a cave the USA and Canada are probably the last major countries to GO GREEN they are doing everything possible to prevent it.European countries are far more advanced in the green way than we will ever be.There is a lot of lip service to green but that is about it.
Reply:The major countries like the US, Canada, most of Europe (probably tops for the world), and Japan are concerned with it. However its expensive and the money isn't always there to actually do anything sometimes.





China and India are more about making money at all costs. The governments and companies are corrupt and will do anything to avoid anything that might raise costs or slow down production.





African counties would be happy with doing anything productive. I doubt they care about pollution.
Reply:Its a world wide phenomonon. The U.S. is the number contributor to the global warming mind you.
Reply:China is most definitely not doing much about "going green" right now or altering their ongoing environmental impact. The U.S. is focused on it a lot lately because the media and marketing worlds are drawing attention to green living and Earth Month. However, I do think there are many individuals who care and are making personal changes. Around the world, a lot of cities and towns are taking green steps on their own, understanding that it's hard to make significant changes country and even worldwide. Places like San Francisco, Amsterdam, Berlin and other German cities are making major changes. They are making the changes, the rest of the world is learning and trying to follow suit.
Reply:No. Japan, Germany and China (I think) are the leading countries in "going green". Germany I think is number one, per the TV program I watched about saving energy. Germany has so many tax breaks for green things, like solar energy and the like. It was a really facinating program, I really wish I knew what it was called on our public television station.
Reply:The resources consumed and waste generated per capita in the US is the highest in the world (it stands at around 40%). So naturally, when such initiative's taken up, the visibility is more. And honestly, US needs to do a lot in this regar to make sure that they take the lead. In the other countries, due to various socio-economic and sometimes political reasons, the usage of resources and waste disposal is much more limited as there is a lot of natural recycling (as a part of normal usage) that's done to make sure you get the "value for money" out of it. This makes the usage of resources more efficient.





For example, in some countries there is a restriction to register more than one car. You need to pay a very high tax in case you buy a second. Similarly, some countries are encouraging the usage of bicycles by making streets exclusive for bikes.





In some arid and sub tropic countries, the usage of water resources is done very carefully by the surrounding communities so as not to dry out the natural springs as this might lead to water scarcity.





Another way is getting carbon credits where if some countries cannot meet emission norms they will take carbon credits by planting trees someplace else and so on. Overall, almost with or without awareness, people are doing their bit to going green. But still a lot needs to be done. Hope the good trend continues.
Reply:Going green is mostly a load of bunk. Most of the "green" stuff you see is just supposed to make you feel good, but produced more pollution during manufacture and consumes more energy than it saves.





EDIT gar_fan CHINA!??!!?! CHINA cranks out more filth than any other country on the planet. It is THE LARGEST producer of atmospheric and waterways pollution by a LONG shot.......
Reply:Ouch, The USA is one of the worlds worst polluters out there. I hope they go green, it would solve a lot of problems. I do live in Canada. We have mandatory 5 step garbage sorting. Paper,plastic, tin cans, glass and now compost, by law. They implemented composting bi laws in Canada maybe 3-4 years ago. We are one of the only countries that have.
