Even if humans only contribute a portion to climate change, is it worth it to do what we can ?

Many European countries are taking climate change quite seriously. Some countries, such as China, present a problem, although there are pro-green public demonstrations there.

There are natural climate cycles.

Should we change our lifestyles and do what we can, in your opinion?

Whatever your beliefs, please keep it courteous.

People of different opinions are serious and well meaning.

Even if humans only contribute a portion to climate change, is it worth it to do what we can ?
yes. conservation is never bad. even if climate change turns out to be a bunch of crap, fossil fuels are a finite resource. most geologist estimate there is only 30-75 years worth left of it before the supply gets too low that it is no longer widely available enough to be a cheap workhorse fuel. and alternative methods really suck as is and might not be able to pick up the slack when that happens. also, fossil fuels (mainly oil) have a major impact on our economy and political relations, exhibit A the war on terror. why should we just keep wasting it so we can drive big *** SUVs that get 15 mpg? itd be nice to mandate geothermal heating in all new buildings as well as heating/cooling is one of the biggest uses of energy.

and if climate change is real, by the time it is proved it will be too late to do anything about it and we'll have to accept the consequences, which may or may not be a big deal. frankly anyone who thinks conserving is a bad thing is an idiot, whether they beleive in global warming or not.

but you are right, it is a global thing and if one nation doesnt use it, another like china will so its going to be a tough problem to tackle

and to the guy below me that says it costs too much, i think the population of canada is like 150-200 million people.... if its costing them 1.2 billion a year to reduce their greenhouse gases 8%, thats about $6-7 per person per year... dinner at a fast food restuarant....
Reply:Definitely! Any of us can make a difference, even if it's tiny. Start by recycling instead of throwing things out. It takes energy and, as a result, more pollution and gases released into the atmosphere to make anything, like that bottled water you buy every day, probably more than once a day. What's wrong with tap water? Why not refill the same bottle and use it over and over? Stop using the car to go to the grocery store three blocks away, and most of all, STOP using SUV'S! We complain about global warming and dependence on oil producing countries but I see more SUV's in the streets than any other, less gas guzzling vehicles (kudos to hybrid cars owners!). Lots can be done and it all makes a difference, even if you can't see it immediately.
Reply:To keep my answer short and simple....

It is worth doing whatever we can to try and save the human race. But even if we try our hardest, it's not going to stop climate change, just delay it. And eventually it will happen anyway.
Reply:Yes.

It is mind-boggling; Americans contribute about 210 Million Tons to landfills yearly.

Recycle.

Have you heard of Corn Plastics? They are fully degradable.

I buy glass containers when possible.

My sons are all grown now, but growing up they were taught to turn things OFF when not in use.

My grandchildren are being taught the same.

Just little things make a difference. If All of Us would do ONE little thing a day to help, what a World of Difference we would Create.

Have a great day!
Reply:Humans play a VERY, VERY small part, if any, in the climate change cycle. If we returned to Stone Age living, it would have no meaningful impact on climate change.

So the real question is, are we willing to destroy our economies and subject the 3rd world to an eternity of poverty, starvation and disease for nothing more than a "warm fuzzy feeling?"
Reply:What can it hurt? As for natural climate changes, we've experienced 10 record breaking hot years with 7 all being in the last 2 decades. So, I think this is more than just a normal 'climate change'. The US is being stubborn to act because we are such a contributor to the CO2 content. I belief is we don't change our lifestyles ASAP, that the decline of the planet will be our generations' legacy.
Reply:Yes we should still try to do what we can - if we can decrease our effect on the environment, even if this is only part of the problem, we are still helping to solve part of the problem, which is better than nothing.
Reply:We were all taught as kids to keep our rooms clean and pick up after ourselves. I don't think it is unrealistic to expect that of ourselves and our "global" room. But dealing with various types of pollution in a reasonable manner is totally different than making huge societal and costly changes that won't impact on natural cycles of global climate change.
Reply:However small changes we can contribute to save our planet, it is surely worth it.
Reply:It really is an Inconvenient truth.......the truth is Al Gore is either and liar or a dumb@ss. I found a video that completely proves his data wrong. Through misleading people on the facts.......

Reply:i saw just lay it on e.........all of this is signs of the second comming.........true....so iam just gonna sit her and let it keep on going
Reply:Unfortunately, it is probably *not* worth it to try to major changes. Doing what we can to reduce pollution and energy waste is fine, but not the radical stuff the socialists want.

Partial proof comes from the performance of countries that signed on to the Kyoto Treaty - in short, they are all missing their goals and discovering that it costs too much to implement (ref 1).
Reply:conservation is never bad what i think is that you will have to think if one person can bring about the change in the scoiety we live
Reply:of course, everyone should do something. please start with the number 1 cause of polluters leading to climate change. there's already too much debate about it. i say just do it already.

and, please don't forget to address other important issues, too.

poverty and world hunger, for instance. a lot of children are dying each day and too many people don't care as long as they get to speak their mind on issues and go on speaking. enough said here.

thank you.
Reply:We need to get off foreign oil anyway and reduction in pollution is good, so why not get small cars and smaller houses and shift to wind, nuclear, clean coal, etc., etc.

It will raise the cost of energy and our economy will suffer some, but our security is needed. Maybe if we all started driving little cars that get 40 MPG, the savings in gas cost would make up for the more expensive electricity.
